Album review: 'Solstice' by A.A. Williams

Solstice

A.A. Williams

A.A. Williams doesn't need to raise her voice to hold your attention. On Solstice, the quieter moments often do just as much work as the big guitar sections. That's useful on an album that spends nearly an hour moving through lost love, uncertainty and the effort of getting yourself back together.

Poison opens with guitar and gives the arrangement time to develop before the heavier sound arrives. Williams' singing stays close and clear, which helps the build feel connected to the song. The volume has a purpose. You can understand why the music needs to get bigger at that point.

Wolves keeps that balance in a more compact form. The quieter verses leave room for the voice, then the chorus adds weight without overwhelming it. Williams has a very distinctive presence: controlled, vulnerable and capable of making a simple phrase carry quite a lot.

Little by Little introduces electronic textures and a more clipped vocal rhythm. It's a useful change within the album, and it shows how much variation can come from small adjustments. There are several moments where the instruments step back and let the tension build through the delivery instead.

Outlines is one of the strongest songs here. It moves patiently towards its heavier section, with the earlier space giving that arrival real force. I've Seen Enough follows with a more direct emotional edge, and the run into The Veil makes a strong centre for the record.

The overall mood stays fairly dark, and the repeated quiet-to-loud movement can feel familiar. This is also a long album for music that asks for close attention. A shorter running time might have made some of its strongest moments stand out even more.

Still, the writing is thoughtful and the performances give it substance. Solstice has plenty of impressive sound, but the voice keeps bringing the focus back to something human. If you like your guitar music heavy in feeling as well as volume, Williams gives you a lot to connect with.
