Album review: 'Never Before Seen, Never Again Found' by Arm’s Length

Never Before Seen, Never Again Found

Never Before Seen, Never Again Found gives Arm’s Length a strong introduction. The Canadian band combine emo and pop-punk with a softer, reflective side, using clear melodies to carry songs about memory and difficult relationships. Their debut feels familiar in a useful way, with enough care in the arrangements to make the emotional weight convincing.

Overture establishes that approach through gentle guitar and strings. The singing is carefully harmonised, with the arrangement growing into something much larger as the song develops. It makes an effective opening because the added weight comes from the same melodic idea. The band allow the quieter material to become the basis for the fuller sound.

Object Permanence is more immediate. Its strong rhythmic movement supports the melody, while the changes between cleaner singing and rougher outbursts give the vocal a wider range.

Muscle Memory slows the pace again. The arrangement gathers strength gradually, allowing its affectionate, sorrowful mood to develop rather than asking the vocal to supply all the feeling. The measured build gives the album another clear point of focus and helps the surrounding songs feel more varied.

In Loving Memory offers a brighter contrast. Its melody has a lighter character despite the title, and the slower closing section adds synth and hazier guitar textures. That shift gives the song a satisfying final shape.

The album is less suited to listeners who want riffs and instrumental tricks at the centre of everything. Its main strengths are melody, atmosphere and straightforward emotional expression, with familiar genre conventions still easy to recognise. Yet those choices give the songs a clear purpose. Dirge brings the sequence to a convincing close, leaving the sense of a band who understand the record they want to make. This is an assured debut whose strongest passages earn their emotional impact through patient, well-shaped songwriting.
