Spectrum
Spectrum gives Billy Cobham's powerful drumming a strong set of musical settings. Guitar, keyboards and bass have enough space to build their own character, making the record more than a drummer's showcase. The arrangements combine forceful rock rhythms, funk grooves and quieter jazz passages without losing a clear sense of movement.
Quadrant 4 begins at full speed. Tommy Bolin's guitar runs over a driving drum pattern, with the two musicians matching each other's energy. The performance is busy, but its direction is straightforward. The rhythm keeps pulling the music forward, giving the instrumental detail a firm foundation.
Taurian Matador provides another strong exchange between guitar and keyboards. Jan Hammer's synthesizer can approach the guitar's sharpness, making the changing lead roles part of the excitement. The bass keeps the performance grounded while Cobham adds precise, forceful accents around it. The musicians sound closely connected rather than simply competing for space.
Stratus develops its groove more gradually. An unsettled electronic opening and fast drum figures lead towards a much steadier bass pattern. That shift gives the guitar room to become more expansive. The piece succeeds through the contrast between its solid rhythmic centre and the freer movement of the lead instruments.
The record also has a gentler side. To the Women in My Life introduces Le Lis through piano, leading into a lighter jazz arrangement. The horn-led title track changes the instrumental balance again. These passages make the heavier quartet performances feel like part of a wider record, rather than the only sound available.
Snoopy's Search moves through synthesizer colour before Red Baron settles into a relaxed, bluesy groove. The bass stays simple and deep in the rhythm, leaving space for the guitar and keyboards. It is an effective closing choice after so much fast, concentrated playing.
The brief interludes can interrupt the flow, and the busiest passages demand attention. Even so, the album has an unusually clear relationship between its technical playing and its grooves. Cobham gives the musicians freedom while keeping the music firmly shaped. Spectrum is a lively, varied fusion record whose strongest moments make considerable skill sound direct.
