Album review: 'Dark Before Dawn' by Breaking Benjamin

Dark Before Dawn

Failure is an appropriate place to hear what Dark Before Dawn does well. A patient guitar opening leaves room for Benjamin Burnley's voice, then the chorus expands without losing the song's darker tone. Breaking Benjamin have a recognisable method, and this track uses it with conviction.

The 2015 album arrived with a substantially changed lineup, but the musical identity remains stable. The guitars form a dense frame around Burnley's melodies, and the production keeps the choruses broad and clear. Angels Fall is another effective example, with a vocal hook definite enough to cut through the weight of the arrangement.

Hollow adds a little more character to the middle section. Its heavier movement gives the singing a firmer sense of friction, making it stand out among songs that otherwise share a similar pace. Close to Heaven is less distinctive, despite a strong vocal performance. The difference is not the musicians' ability to play the material, but how much individual shape the song gives them.

Ashes of Eden provides the most useful change. The quieter setting and vocal harmonies allow Burnley to communicate through restraint, and the melody holds attention without a large guitar release. The song suggests more possibilities inside the band's sound than several of the louder tracks explore. A small change in texture can matter more than another increase in force.

The brief Dark and Dawn pieces give the record a frame, though they contribute more atmosphere than meaning. Defeated brings the fuller attack back near the end, and the return is less striking after the more exposed mood of Ashes of Eden. Several other songs also fall back on familiar melodic and rhythmic shapes, making the complete sequence less varied than its strongest points.

Dark Before Dawn is a capable, sometimes very effective Breaking Benjamin album. Burnley's voice and the best hooks provide a clear reason to listen. The limitation is that the record repeatedly returns to a well-established answer, even after its quieter moments have shown that a different approach could be equally convincing.
