Candlebox

Candlebox

Candlebox put a bluesy hard-rock voice inside a thick nineties guitar sound, and their debut gets a lot of mileage from that combination. Kevin Martin can sing with a rough edge or lean into a more open melody, while Peter Klett's guitar gives the songs plenty of weight and detail.

Far Behind remains the most convincing example. The quieter opening makes room for Martin to establish the tune before the band starts pushing harder. The chorus has a proper lift, but the song also has enough shape around it to avoid feeling like a single idea repeated until the end. Its emotional pull comes from the performance as much as the words.

You is more direct, with a heavy groove and a vocal that moves towards anger. The band keep it controlled enough to make the bursts of force count. Cover Me gives Martin another strong melody, allowing the guitars to support the rising vocal rather than compete with it. These songs have familiar rock structures, but the group understand how to make those structures effective.

The broader sound is closer to classic hard rock than the grunge label sometimes suggests. There is room for guitar leads, a steady sense of groove and a singer who is happy to make a large gesture. Change shows the band stretching a song beyond a quick chorus, while the quieter side of the playing gives the heavier passages a useful contrast.

That approach has limits. Some of the songs depend more on the force of the band than on a particularly memorable tune, and the big emotional delivery can make a modest idea feel a little overworked. The debut is more convincing at its peaks than in every connecting passage.

Still, those peaks have held up well. Candlebox offers strong singing, substantial guitars and a handful of choruses that explain its lasting place in rock playlists. It is a good choice for listeners who enjoy the warmth and guitar playing of older hard rock alongside a more troubled alternative-rock mood. The familiar songs are strong, and the band's musical personality is clear around them.
