Heavy Pendulum
Heavy Pendulum has a lot to carry, and Cave In give it the space to do so. Fourteen tracks stretch past seventy minutes, bringing together heavy riffs, broad rock melodies and more patient, atmospheric passages. It is a large album, but the range feels connected. The same band can sound raw and forceful one moment, then open the music out without losing its weight.
New Reality provides a strong introduction. The guitars have a thick, grungy edge, while clean singing and harsher vocals pull the song in different directions. Its chorus is large enough to make the track immediately clear, even with all that pressure around it. Blood Spiller puts more emphasis on a heavy, steady groove. Floating Skulls and Careless Offering bring quicker movement and more complicated turns into the picture.
The slower material gives Heavy Pendulum much of its identity. The title track and Blinded by a Blaze let their melodies sit inside broader guitar sounds, finding a useful balance between warmth and unease. The brief Pendulambient and Days of Nothing offer further changes in texture. These smaller pieces help connect an album that might otherwise feel like a long collection of separate directions.
Reckoning provides another welcome shift, with a more exposed vocal and a bluesier feel. Wavering Angel then uses its extended running time for a proper closing statement. The quieter acoustic opening leaves plenty of room for the heavier passages that follow. Rather than simply adding more riffs at the end, Cave In give the final track a gradual sense of movement and scale.
The length remains a real consideration. There is a lot of slower, densely packed music here, and taking it all in at once requires more attention than the strongest individual songs do. A tighter sequence might have made some of the quieter turns stand out sooner. Still, the variety usually gives the album enough movement to justify its size.
Heavy Pendulum succeeds because the heavy and melodic sides feel equally necessary. Cave In can deliver a direct rock song, but they also know how to stretch an idea without removing its shape. This is a substantial, rewarding album for listeners who want both strong songs and room to explore around them.
