Album review: '-!-' by Dead Poet Society

-!-

Dead Poet Society build much of -!-'s appeal around a striking difference in register. Jack Underkofler can move easily into a high falsetto, while the low-tuned guitar parts create a much heavier world beneath him. The tension between those sounds gives the band's debut an identity before any particular genre label becomes useful. The songs can be aggressive, soft or rhythmically slippery without losing that central relationship.

“.SALT.” is a particularly good example. Its beat has a hip-hop feel, the riff carries a much thicker weight, and Underkofler's restrained phrasing fits between them. The parts create interest by behaving differently. “.intoodeep.” gives the guitar more room to swagger, while “.burymewhole.” uses a chugging breakdown to make the contrast with the voice even more physical. The musicians have enough control to make those shifts feel deliberate rather than accidental.

The hooks are just as important as the distinctive sound. “.getawayfortheweekend.” has an immediate melodic pull, and “.CoDA.” shows how naturally the band can make a chorus stand apart from the textures around it. “I Never Loved Myself Like I Loved You” takes a softer route, bringing the singer's self-examination closer to the listener. The closing “.haunted.” is even more exposed. Its reduced backing gives Underkofler a clear emotional space, and his voice supplies the movement without needing another large riff.

The spoken interruptions are less useful. They can break the flow just as the musical range is beginning to form a coherent picture, and a few passages seem more interested in presenting another side of the band than developing a song. Even so, -!- has a recognizable character across its many changes. The best tracks make the unusual guitar tone and flexible singing work toward a clear hook or feeling. The debut is strongest when the musicians trust those connections and allow the songs themselves to explain what makes the band different.
