Empath
A gentle choir, a harsh scream and a bright dance rhythm can all belong to the same song on Empath. Devin Townsend treats those sounds as different emotional possibilities, allowing them to interrupt and answer one another. The album is unpredictable, but its strongest passages are held together by a clear desire to turn confusion into connection.
Castaway opens a calm space before Genesis begins moving through an extraordinary range of textures. Heavy drums, orchestral colour and sudden lighter passages arrive in quick succession. The central vocal melody gives the track a point of return, making its abrupt turns feel like parts of a recognisable composition.
Spirits Will Collide is much more direct. Its steady pace and broad choral arrangement give Townsend's hopeful message a simple musical form. The song matters to the sequence because it lets an emotion remain in place long enough to become clear. The surrounding complexity feels more meaningful after that pause.
Evermore brings intricate rhythm into a strongly theatrical setting. Hear Me pushes the heavier elements much harder, with rapid drums and forceful vocal attacks creating a particularly intense stretch. Townsend's range is impressive throughout, but the variety of the ensemble is just as important. The arrangements sound carefully performed even when they seem ready to break apart.
Why? takes the theatrical impulse into an almost musical-theatre setting. Its commitment is persuasive, although the sharp changes between styles will feel excessive to listeners who want a more continuous atmosphere. Sprite is less compelling as a developed song, with its gentle narrative approach slowing the album without producing an equally strong melodic reward.
Borderlands and the extended Singularity make better use of their scale by allowing contrasting moods to develop and reconnect. The production keeps an unusual amount of detail audible across both quiet and heavy sections. The record's generosity is also its challenge: it asks the listener to accept a wide emotional range at once. The finest moments make that openness sound like a real source of strength.
