Album review: 'The Way' by Dorothy

The Way

Dorothy

Dorothy Martin has a voice that can make a fairly ordinary rock arrangement feel like an event. The Way gives her plenty of opportunities to do that. The guitars are large, the choruses are direct, and the songs mix faith, recovery and personal arguments with a good amount of Southern-rock attitude.

I Come Alive puts the voice first before the band joins in. It's a strong opening because it makes the record's main attraction clear without delaying the song. The Devil I Know and Mud keep the pace moving. The riffs have weight, but the melodies are designed to stay clear above them.

Tombstone Town, featuring Slash, is one of the obvious highlights. His guitar fits the rougher, bluesy setting, and the song doesn't need to stop while everybody admires the guest. It has a good sense of forward movement. Martin sounds fully involved, which matters more than the famous name on the track listing.

The album's spiritual side is openly part of the writing. It feels most convincing when it connects to something personal, as it does in the closing title track. The piano leaves space around the vocal, and the performance has enough feeling to make the simpler language work. You don't have to share every belief to understand the need behind it.

Elsewhere, the writing can rely too much on familiar images of fire, temptation and survival. They suit the music, but a few songs feel more general than Martin's voice deserves. Bones and Unholy Water change the pace without making quite the same impression as the stronger singles.

Haunted House brings the character back. The central idea is clear, the hook is effective, and the band give Martin a firm setting for another powerful performance. It is the sort of song this record needs: direct, memorable and specific enough to stand apart.

The Way is a solid hard-rock album with an exceptional singer at its centre. The best songs give that voice more than a large chorus to carry, and those are the moments that make the record worth your time.
