The Darker Side of Nonsense
The Darker Side of Nonsense makes a direct case for heavy riffs and forceful vocals. Dry Kill Logic keep the guitars substantial and the rhythms physical, with Cliff Rigano moving between a rough attack and a more melodic delivery. The record is effective at creating pressure. It is less successful at making that pressure sound different from the surrounding nu-metal scene.
Nightmare establishes the approach quickly. The vocal and guitars give the opening a hard impact, while Rot finds another strong rhythmic movement inside the same aggressive sound. The band do not need complicated arrangements to make these performances register.
Pain gives Rigano more room to vary his approach. The shifts between singing and screaming add useful contrast, with the heavier playing providing a consistent foundation. The vocal range makes the song more engaging than a performance built entirely around one level of aggression.
A Better Man Than Me has an effective drum opening. The combination of guitar and drums gives the heavier passages a firm shape, helping the record retain some interest beyond its central sound.
Track 13 offers a clearer change of setting. Rigano's more restrained singing creates space before the heavier arrangement returns, giving the familiar contrast a useful purpose. The later Goodnight provides a quieter ending, showing another side of the band after the sustained force elsewhere.
The main weakness is the limited individuality of several songs. The aggression is convincing, but familiar riffs and recurring structures can make the record feel too close to other releases in the same style. Some more distinct melodic ideas would give the strongest performances more to work with.
Even so, The Darker Side of Nonsense has a clear appeal for listeners who enjoy the heavier end of nu metal. The drums, guitar weight and vocal changes provide several worthwhile moments. It is a solid record within a narrow set of limits, strongest when a smaller musical detail gives the force a more individual shape.
