Magma
Grief gives Magma its emotional centre. Gojira retain their precise heavy grooves, but the songs make more room for clean singing, sustained melody and quieter reflection. The change gives Joe Duplantier's voice a different responsibility: it has to communicate uncertainty and loss without relying entirely on the force of a harsh delivery.
The Shooting Star establishes that mood with a measured pace and an unusually exposed vocal. The guitar figure repeats patiently, creating an atmosphere that is heavy without sounding constantly aggressive. It is a thoughtful opening because it allows the feeling to develop before demanding a large response.
Silvera makes the connection between this approach and the band's harder sound especially clear. Its sharp opening attack leads into a strong melodic vocal section, while the instrumental passage adds detail without obscuring the song. Mario Duplantier's drums keep the arrangement active through changes that remain easy to follow.
Stranded is even more immediate. The distinctive guitar effect gives its central riff a clear identity, and the vocal hook is direct enough to carry the track. The song's accessibility feels purposeful because the rhythmic language remains recognisably Gojira. Its emotional impact does not depend on complexity.
The title track develops a more spacious structure, allowing the guitar lines and melodic singing to unfold gradually. Pray restores a heavier pressure in the second half. These shifts prevent the record from settling into a single form of mourning, with anger and reflection often occupying neighbouring passages.
A few quieter vocal phrases are less distinctive than the guitar writing around them. The restrained approach also leaves less room for the sudden structural turns that make some Gojira songs so unpredictable. Those are real tradeoffs, although the strongest material benefits from the concentration.
Low Lands builds patiently towards a heavier release, and the sparse acoustic instrumental Liberation gives the album a peaceful close. The sequence makes the reduced scale feel emotionally complete. Gojira's control remains impressive, but the most moving quality here is their willingness to let a simple musical idea carry difficult feelings.
