Stasis
Stasis puts Hippotraktor's sharp rhythmic playing beside softer guitars and contrasting voices. The Belgian band can make a riff feel heavy through its stops and accents, then open the same music into something more spacious. That control is impressive. The question is whether the carefully arranged contrasts produce as much feeling as they do technical interest.
Descent begins with force instead of a long introduction. The guitars combine a blunt attack with more open melodic lines, while harsh and clean vocals provide different ways into the arrangement. Echoes continues the movement between pressure and relief, giving the opening stretch enough variation to avoid becoming a single extended assault.
Silver Tongue is more compact, using tightly divided rhythms to make its heavier passages count. Renegade allows a larger contrast between ringing lead guitar and shorter, harder chords.
The Indifferent Human Eye is a stronger example of the patient approach. Its quiet beginning makes the later bursts of energy more effective. The music moves between restrained passages and a much larger sound, with the two voices reinforcing the change. The build gives the heavier ending a sense of purpose.
The title track places more emphasis on thick riffs and a substantial refrain. Quieter moments provide brief pauses around the main attack. The Reckoning then takes more time to reach its heavier centre, using a repeating, atmospheric opening to prepare the final increase in force.
The singing is an important strength throughout. Stefan de Graef and Sander Rom provide contrast and harmony, allowing the clean passages to contribute more than simple relief.
Stasis is less distinctive than its level of skill might suggest. Its shifts between heavy rhythms and gentler passages belong to a familiar style, and the emotional effect does not always match the care of the playing. Even so, the strongest builds and vocal exchanges make it rewarding. Hippotraktor deliver a confident progressive metal record, with enough detail to justify returning beyond its first impact.
