Inlet
Inlet makes its size felt through the guitars. Hum favour slow, heavy riffs that have time to settle, with smaller lead lines and Matt Talbott's understated voice giving the music a more delicate side. The songs are long, but the band rarely sound as though they are adding sections simply to fill the space. The weight is part of the writing.
Step Into You is the most immediate way in. Its more direct structure and thick guitar melody give the album a clear point of focus. Talbott's quiet delivery sits well against that larger sound, allowing the tune to emerge without turning it into a conventional rock anthem. It is an accessible moment inside a much broader record.
Cloud City handles the contrast differently. The guitars sound huge around a lighter melody, and the shifting rhythm keeps the song from becoming fixed in one place. The drumming gains a stronger presence towards its ending. It is a useful reminder that these arrangements depend on movement underneath the distortion as much as on the guitar tone itself.
The Summoning is more patient and imposing. Its slow, sustained force gives the record a darker pull, with little need for a sudden change of direction. Folding later lets the heavier music fall away into a much more open, suspended sound. Those quieter passages make the scale of the surrounding songs easier to appreciate.
Shapeshifter provides a convincing final statement. Its longer form has a memorable melody to hold it together, and the gentler ending gives the album somewhere to arrive. Hum are especially strong when the atmosphere develops around an idea that remains clear beneath it.
The same pace can be demanding across a full listen. Some riffs reveal their appeal slowly, and the drum parts do not always add as much character as the guitars. Those limits keep Inlet from feeling equally vivid throughout, but they do not weaken its central achievement. Hum have built a substantial album from texture, restraint and carefully sustained force. It offers plenty to listeners who like their heavy guitar music to feel spacious as well as powerful.
