Come Clarity
Come Clarity is driven by the way its guitars and vocal hooks compete for attention. In Flames puts sharp harmonized leads beside large choruses, making the songs feel immediate without removing their abrasive edge. The most effective moments occur when those two melodic approaches strengthen each other.
Take This Life opens at a brisk pace, with the guitars creating movement around Anders Fridén's urgent delivery. The chorus supplies a clear release while the instruments retain their force. Leeches makes good use of a related balance, adding restrained electronic color without letting it replace the guitar writing. Reflect the Storm is more measured, giving its refrain and lead work room to develop a recognizable atmosphere.
The title track provides the most substantial change in emphasis. Acoustic guitar and a more open beginning allow Fridén's exposed voice to establish the feeling before the band becomes heavier. The lead guitar development is particularly expressive, giving the song another emotional peak beyond the chorus. It is a useful reminder that a slower arrangement can carry as much intensity as the faster material.
Crawl Through Knives brings the main strengths together in a concentrated form. The vocal melody has a definite shape, the rougher delivery preserves urgency, and the guitars provide details worth following beneath the hook. Vanishing Light gives the lead playing a more restless setting. Jesper Strömblad and Björn Gelotte make their brief instrumental exchanges count, often giving a song its most memorable phrase within a short span.
The experiments are less evenly realized. Lisa Miskovsky's voice adds a clear contrast on Dead End, though the duet does not transform the song as much as it might. Scream is more blunt, relying on collective emphasis where the better tracks find a stronger melodic idea. The atmospheric closing piece, Your Bedtime Story Is Scaring Everyone, also suggests a larger development that its brief full-band passage only partly delivers.
Even so, Come Clarity has a convincing musical focus. Its hooks are strong enough to carry the direct structures, and the guitar harmonies give the heavier passages an individual voice. In Flames makes the aggressive and accessible parts of its sound work together, with the title track adding an especially valuable measure of patience.
