Album review: 'Hellmode' by Jeff Rosenstock

Hellmode

Hellmode is a good place to hear how much Jeff Rosenstock can say by changing the space around his voice. The frantic songs remain frantic, but quieter passages have a clear purpose. He is thinking about responsibility, self-doubt and the feeling that the world keeps getting harder to understand. The arrangements let those thoughts arrive in different forms.

“WILL U STILL U” opens with a demanding question about whether affection can survive someone's failures. The song's bursts of speed and sudden gentler details make the anxiety feel active. “HEAD” concentrates the pressure into a short, forceful piece, while “LIKED U BETTER” offers a more direct melodic attack. The record can still deliver the quick physical release of punk without making every song use it.

“DOUBT” is the strongest construction here. Its opening has a hesitant, almost easy movement before the band gathers around a faster, much larger finish. The shift makes the repeated idea feel tested rather than merely announced. “HEALMODE” works at the opposite scale, finding affection in a rainy day and the ordinary surroundings of a shared life. Rosenstock's attention feels especially valuable when he stops trying to shout over everything.

Not every middle track has that distinction. “LIFE ADMIN” is tuneful but less emotionally specific, and the sequence sometimes feels like separate good songs searching for a common direction. The sound is clear enough to reveal those differences rather than hide them. A quieter arrangement is useful only when the underlying idea can hold the extra attention.

The seven-minute “3 SUMMERS” gives the album a broad, noisy destination. Its repeated worries gather force through the playing and the supporting voices, making persistence feel like a group activity. Hellmode offers less of a single uninterrupted surge than its loud opening might promise. Its best moments come from accepting that concern can sound like a panicked shout, a carefully observed afternoon or a long song that keeps going anyway.
