Acheron
The sound of running water opens Acheron, placing King Buffalo's music inside the setting where it was recorded. The trio performed these four long pieces live at Howe Caverns in New York. The location gives the album a spacious character, but the playing provides its real focus. Repeated rhythms, clear bass lines and gradual changes in the guitar create a strong sense of movement.
The title track makes good use of that space. Clean guitar lines slowly gather weight as bass and drums join the arrangement. Distortion brings a harder edge, then falls back to leave the notes ringing. The changes between calm and force are central to the song, and the band's measured pace makes each return feel deliberate.
Zephyr has a more active rhythm from the start. The drums give its layered guitar parts something firm to move around, while the singing gradually becomes stronger. A heavier section changes the direction in the middle before the opening ideas return. That clear shape helps a piece of nearly ten minutes remain easy to follow.
Shadows puts the bass further forward. The guitar and drums hold back enough for its moving lines to become the main attraction, with synthesizer adding another colour to the arrangement. The darker mood connects well with the heavier parts of the record without making every song feel equally forceful.
Cerberus closes with a tense, patient performance. A droning introduction gives way to more active drums and firmer guitar riffs, with the band repeatedly changing the pressure. There is enough room around the instruments for the smaller movements to matter as much as the larger sections.
The four extended tracks ask for a certain kind of attention. Some bursts of distortion interrupt the smoother flow, and the melodies are often more effective inside the arrangement than as hooks that stand alone. Yet Acheron uses its narrow setup well. The players stay closely connected, giving the music detail without making it busy. It is an absorbing record whose unusual recording space supports a convincing set of performances.
