Vitalogy
Vitalogy can offer a huge chorus and then immediately make you wonder whether Pearl Jam want anyone to sing along. The songs pull towards an audience, while the little experiments seem determined to push it away. That friction gives the album a nervous energy all its own.
Last Exit gets moving with an urgency that makes a long introduction unnecessary. Spin the Black Circle is faster and rougher, driven by a guitar attack that sounds close to coming apart. Eddie Vedder responds with a performance that favours momentum over grand gestures. The leaner sound makes these tracks feel different from the wide, ringing rock of Ten.
Not for You moves more slowly but is no less forceful. Its riff has a stubbornness that fits the singing, and the song builds pressure without needing constant changes. Corduroy finds a more open route. The guitars keep pushing ahead as the vocal melody broadens, creating one of the album's strongest combinations of tension and release.
The quieter tracks are just as important. Nothingman has a directness that gives the words room to land, while Better Man turns a very accessible melody into an uncomfortable account of a relationship. The latter's gradual rise feels natural because the arrangement follows the emotional movement of the song. Immortality is another strong example of how much this band can communicate without a full-volume assault.
Then there is Bugs, with its accordion and muttered delivery, and the extended sound collage that closes the album. These pieces help explain the record's unsettled character, but explanation does not make them equally rewarding as music. The interruptions can sharpen the surrounding songs; they can also interrupt the desire to play the album straight through.
That is a real limitation, yet the best material more than compensates. Vitalogy captures a band questioning how its songs should work while still writing several that work exceptionally well. Its force comes from the distance between the polished shape of a memorable tune and the strained performance inside it.
