Album review: 'Nowhere' by Ride

Nowhere

Nowhere brings a strong rhythm section into music built from overlapping guitar layers. Ride can make an enormous sound, but the songs remain melodic and the singing has a gentle presence inside the distortion. The contrast gives the record its character. Its quieter passages are often as important as the moments when the guitars take over.

Seagull makes the band's strengths clear. The bass has a lively, rounded shape, while the drums give the surrounding guitars a firm direction. The singing offers another point of connection without needing to sit far above the instruments. It is a dense opening with enough movement to keep its different parts interesting.

Kaleidoscope provides a quicker burst of energy before In a Different Place turns towards a calmer mood. Its recurring guitar melody and straightforward drum pattern give the vocal room to settle into the arrangement. Ride make this gentler material feel substantial without pushing everything to the same volume.

Dreams Burn Down is one of the strongest examples of their range. Its clear melody is interrupted by much louder guitar passages, and the distance between the two gives each more impact. The noise has a purpose because there is a memorable song underneath it.

Vapour Trail closes the original vinyl sequence with a particularly effective melody. The chiming guitars and final strings give it a wistful character, bringing the record towards a softer ending. It shows how well Ride can hold attention through a song's shape rather than sheer guitar weight.

There are limits to the approach. The slower middle stretch can seem to lose momentum, and Decay has less melodic appeal than the strongest material. The singing also works better as part of the whole sound than as a constant focus.

Those reservations leave plenty to enjoy. Nowhere combines forceful playing with a clear sense of melody, and its best songs make both sides feel necessary. It is an inviting starting point for listeners who want guitar music with atmosphere, energy and a strong human presence.
