Album review: 'Legends' by Sabaton

Legends

Sabaton

Sabaton broaden their history lesson on Legends. The focus moves beyond the world wars to individual figures from much earlier periods, while the music keeps the marching rhythms, large choirs and unmistakable voice of Joakim Brodén. The subject matter has changed more than the method.

Templars is an effective opening. The chorus is easy to follow, the choir gives it scale, and the guitars keep the song firmly inside Sabaton's familiar sound. Hordes of Khan adds more speed, with the drums giving the riff a strong push. Both songs make a clear case for why this approach continues to work for the band.

Maid of Steel is another highlight. It arrives with energy, gives the guitars a good amount of space and builds towards a memorable vocal section. These are the moments where the performance has enough force to make the familiar structure feel useful.

The slower Impaler tries a different atmosphere, moving between restrained passages and heavier riffs. That gives the album some variety, though its larger melodic gestures aren't quite as convincing as the darker setting. The song has an interesting mood, but doesn't make the most of every part of it.

A Tiger Among Dragons also takes more time to build, with a marching rhythm and keyboards carrying much of the scale. The Cycle of Songs gives the arrangement more space again. Those changes stop the album from becoming a constant run of the same tempo, even if the underlying songwriting remains very recognisable.

The limitation is in the choruses. A few feel designed to be immediately familiar rather than individually memorable, and the constant sense of triumph can flatten the differences between the stories. Sabaton are more effective when a strong riff or a particular mood gives the anthem something distinctive.

Legends has several good songs and some less inspired company around them. Established fans will find plenty of the band's strengths intact. For everyone else, the opening pair and Maid of Steel offer the clearest reasons to give this chapter a try.
