Coup de Grâce
Coup de Grâce makes SeeYouSpaceCowboy's heavier music more theatrical and more melodic without removing its restless character. The San Diego band bring danceable rhythms, emo hooks and a cabaret atmosphere into their post-hardcore, giving the songs a wider range of movement. The result is ambitious but still approachable, with enough clear ideas to hold its different parts together.
Allow Us To Set The Scene does exactly that. Saxophone, piano and guest singer iRis.EXE establish a softer late-night setting before the more forceful band sound arrives. The opening gives the album a distinct character from the start. Its return to that atmosphere later in the sequence helps the quieter material feel like part of the same world.
Subtle Whispers To Take Your Breath Away puts the new balance into a fuller song. The guitars and rhythm encourage movement, while the vocal hooks make the heavier attack easier to enter. SeeYouSpaceCowboy sound more interested in building a complete melody than simply inserting a clean chorus between chaotic sections.
The guests generally strengthen that direction. Courtney LaPlante's appearance on To The Dance Floor For Shelter brings a strong contrast to Connie Sgarbossa's delivery, with the ending's heavier release growing naturally from the vocal exchange. Rhythm and Rapture takes a lighter route, using nothing, nowhere.'s melodic presence within guitar writing that leans towards danceable indie rock.
There is still plenty of aggression in the record. Lubricant Like Kerosene has a firm riff-driven attack, and Chewing The Scenery supplies one of the later sequence's strongest bursts of dramatic force. The more melodic approach gives these moments a different setting rather than leaving them behind.
Not every heavy addition is equally necessary. Some breakdowns feel attached to songs that are already moving confidently towards a more playful sound. The album can seem caught between fully following that direction and keeping its older audience close. Even so, the clarity of the production and the strength of the hooks make the mixture convincing. Coup de Grâce is a lively, imaginative record that gives the band's familiar intensity a broader purpose, with its theatrical details helping the songs belong together.
