Inviolate
Inviolate finds Steve Vai turning unusual guitar ideas into a varied instrumental record. There is plenty of demanding playing, but melody, rhythm and changes of texture give the best pieces a clear shape. The album is less convincing when the technical activity becomes the main point. That tension produces several strong tracks alongside passages that feel more impressive than involving.
Teeth of the Hydra is an effective opening. The warm lead moves over a rhythm with a lighter, Latin-influenced feel, allowing the different guitar parts to create a substantial arrangement. The piece builds well.
Little Pretty brings a funkier exchange between guitar, bass and drums. Its less comfortable melodic character gives Vai another way to make the instrument distinctive without relying entirely on speed.
Candlepower is especially interesting. The fingerpicked guitar and jazz-influenced melody work around a relaxed rhythm, with the separate parts creating a lively conversation. The technical challenge matters because the arrangement gives it a useful musical setting.
Avalancha restores a stronger rock presence. Its heavier riff gives the piece a clear point of connection, balancing the smoother playing around it. Greenish Blues later slows the pace and provides another expressive lead performance, although its quieter movement also exposes the album's tendency to let an idea continue too long.
The weaker passages have less distinctive backing. Sandman Cloud Mist ends with appealing guitar tones, but the supporting arrangement does not provide enough interest. Elsewhere, the sheer number of notes can make the music feel disconnected, with a memorable melody harder to find.
Inviolate remains worthwhile because Vai has a recognisable voice on the instrument and enough different approaches to keep it moving. The best tracks make room for rhythm and melodic purpose alongside the skill. A tighter balance would improve the complete record, but there are several rewarding examples of technique becoming music rather than simply demonstrating itself.
