Mezcal Head
Mezcal Head makes a strong case for Swervedriver as a melodic rock band as well as a forceful guitar group. The riffs remain rough and substantial, but the songs have clear hooks and a useful range of moods. Adam Franklin's relaxed voice sits within the instruments rather than constantly leading them. That balance gives the music character, even when the longer arrangements become less focused.
For Seeking Heat provides an energetic opening through fast drums and a thick guitar line. The performance has a direct physical appeal, with the rhythm keeping the distortion from becoming static.
Duel is one of the clearest highlights. Its more restrained verses give the chorus a strong point of arrival, with the guitar weight making the melody feel larger. Swervedriver bring the accessible and abrasive parts of their sound together particularly well here.
Last Train to Satansville has a different kind of presence. The guitar and firm rhythm provide a strong setting for the song's darker character. Its atmosphere feels purposeful, with enough melodic shape to keep the music from relying on force alone. It is another example of the band's ability to make a substantial rock song inside a dense sound.
Duress gives the playing more space. The slower guitar movement and extended solo create an effective contrast to the more urgent material, although the length also exposes the album's tendency to keep ideas running after they have made their point. A Change Is Gonna Come provides another calmer setting without completely removing the roughness of the playing.
You Find It Everywhere makes an effective ending to the original sequence. Its relatively restrained, steady-moving arrangement gives the record a clear place to finish.
There are passages that would benefit from tighter editing, and the vocals are less distinctive than the instruments. Those reservations do not weaken the main appeal. Mezcal Head combines strong melodies with guitars that have both weight and personality, offering several convincing reasons to explore beyond its best-known single.
