Album review: 'Being Funny in a Foreign Language' by The 1975

Being Funny in a Foreign Language

The 1975

Happiness is a useful reminder of how well The 1975 can play together. The bass moves easily, the guitar adds bright details and the saxophone gives the chorus an extra lift. Being Funny in a Foreign Language puts that band chemistry close to the centre, with songs that feel clearer and more focused than their large range of influences might suggest.

I'm in Love with You is equally immediate. Its repeating guitar part and direct chorus make a simple idea feel completely convincing. Matty Healy's voice is relaxed enough to leave room for the rhythm, and the song doesn't need an elaborate detour to keep moving. The pleasure is in how naturally the parts fit.

Looking for Somebody (To Love) has a much darker story underneath its bright, energetic sound. That difference gives the song a sharp edge, with the music's forward drive making the words more disturbing. Part of the Band is less direct, using strings and changing textures to create a stranger setting for Healy's conversational delivery. The two songs show different ways the group can put unease inside something approachable.

The quieter material gives the record a warmer character. All I Need to Hear allows a plain vocal melody and a more traditional band arrangement to carry the feeling. About You is much more atmospheric, surrounding the voices with a broad, hazy sound. It is a strong contrast to the cleaner grooves elsewhere, while still belonging to the same emotional world.

Healy's more self-aware lines can occasionally draw attention away from the song itself. The record is strongest when a direct feeling or a clear melody has enough room to stand on its own. There are plenty of those moments, and the playing gives them a comfortable, human movement.

Being Funny in a Foreign Language is an appealing meeting point between pop, guitar music and gentler songwriting. The hooks arrive easily, the arrangements have useful detail and the band rarely lose sight of the tune. Happiness and I'm in Love with You make the immediate case; the softer songs give it more depth.
