Witness
Straight Lines gives Witness an immediate physical attraction. The riff keeps circling with considerable weight, but VOLA allow the chorus to change the song's movement rather than merely add volume. That ability to make a complicated arrangement feel direct is the album's main strength.
Head Mounted Sideways pushes the contrast harder. Processed voices and a punishing rhythmic figure create a tense environment, then a warmer melody offers temporary relief. The alternation is dramatic and carefully controlled. At times the sound feels almost too enclosed, yet the song's clear outline prevents the detail from becoming a distraction.
The drumming gives 24 Light-Years a different kind of energy. Small rhythmic movements keep the softer arrangement alive, allowing the voice and instrumental layers to suggest a wider space. The song has an inviting emotional openness that is less dependent on a heavy interruption. It is one of the record's most complete pieces.
These Black Claws is a more conspicuous experiment. SHAHMEN's guest rap brings a different vocal presence into VOLA's sound, with a beat that gives the low guitars another context. The sections do not always feel equally connected, but the risk is useful. It exposes a possible direction instead of simply adding another version of the band's established contrast.
The brighter material is more uneven. Napalm has a substantial hook, although its emphatic electronic backing can crowd the feeling in the singing. Freak also has an appealing melody that might have gained from a less expansive setting. The album is most effective when the arrangement allows its emotional scale to change naturally.
Stone Leader Falling Down restores a sharper edge through its rhythmic insistence and more threatening character. Inside Your Fur then closes with a melody that remains approachable while the surrounding sounds keep a trace of discomfort. That uncertainty gives the ending a stronger aftertaste than uncomplicated uplift would.
Witness contains enough memorable writing to make its dense presentation rewarding. The band occasionally underline a chorus more heavily than it needs, but the rhythmic detail and Mygind's clear vocal identity keep the music engaging. Its finest moments let a song communicate immediately while leaving several less obvious parts worth returning to.
