Meshuggah formed in Umeå, Sweden, in 1987 and became an influential name in extreme metal. Their music is known for overlapping rhythms and carefully interlocking guitar and drum patterns. Records such as Nothing, Catch Thirtythree and obZen helped establish an approach that would strongly influence the later djent movement in progressive metal.
