Golden State puts Bush's guitars back at the centre. The electronic emphasis of The Science of Things gives way to a more direct post-grunge sound, with large riffs and vocal hooks carrying most of the weight. It is a comfortable setting for the band. The strongest songs benefit from that confidence, even when the album's familiar shapes make its limits easy to hear.
