Short Bus keeps Filter's early sound focused on rough guitars, heavy bass and Richard Patrick's sharp, strained voice. The electronic side is present, but the riffs do most of the work. This gives the debut a directness that remains effective, even when its limited range becomes obvious. The record is strongest as a concentrated expression of tension rather than a display of many different ideas.
