The Fall Of Hearts gives Katatonia's dark melodies more room to change. The Swedish band move between heavy guitar passages, quieter acoustic playing and detailed progressive arrangements. Jonas Renkse's voice remains the emotional centre, keeping the record recognisable even when the song structures become less direct. It is a patient album, with enough movement to make its familiar sadness feel fresh.
