Hopium moves Kingcrow towards a more atmospheric form of progressive rock. The Italian band keep enough guitar weight to give the songs force, but rhythm, vocal melody and carefully changing textures do more of the work. The shorter tracks make the album easy to enter, while the longer pieces leave room for a wider range of ideas. Its main weakness is how persistently the mood returns to the same emotional intensity.
