Ahead Of The Game

Mark Knopfler returns to a country vibe with Ahead Of The Game. As you may expect, there are some sweet guitar tones and there's his characteristic dark almost speaking-like singing. Ahead Of The Game is the first single that's come out for the new album that's apparently going to be called "One Deep River". It came out on the 24th of January 2024.
As a music lover (and guitarist) it's not hard to like pretty much anything Mark Knopfler does, but Ahead Of The Game is not one of the most exciting songs I've heard. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but nothing really urges me to listen to it again.
There is an audience for songs like Knopfler's Ahead Of The Game though. When you're on the couch drinking beer with a couple of friends, it's great music that doesn't distract too much from the conversation. In other words, it's a very relaxing tune and there is definitely a time and place for that. But as a standalone song for the audiophile, it's a bit too mellow in my opinion.
