A Snow Capped Romance
A Snow Capped Romance gives 36 Crazyfists' heavy music a stronger melodic centre. Brock Lindow's voice remains distinctive, moving between rough screams and a more open singing style. The guitars and drums still deliver considerable force, but the songs make more room for changes in intensity. That combination gives the record a character beyond the familiar parts of its metalcore sound.
At the End of August establishes the heavier side immediately. Its forceful riffs and urgent vocal delivery give the opening a clear impact, while the melody becomes easier to recognise within the attack. The Heart and the Shape keeps that rhythmic pressure in place rather than allowing the record to soften too quickly.
Bloodwork is the clearest example of the broader approach. The vocal melody gives the chorus a strong point of arrival, with the heavier arrangement increasing its scale. The song works because the tune remains important when the performance becomes more forceful.
Kenai provides another high point. Its substantial bass opening and rising vocal character give the song both weight and a memorable melodic shape. Skin and Atmosphere then allows the guitar playing and singing more space to develop, using changes in intensity to maintain interest.
The second half contains useful departures as well. With Nothing Underneath moves between thrashing force and a slower setting, while Installing the Catheter develops towards a heavier finish after introducing a less conventional spoken passage. These changes give the arrangements more to offer than a simple exchange of screams and choruses.
The balance is not perfect. Song for the Fisherman interrupts the momentum, and some of the more conventional melodic choices feel less individual than the stronger material. Lindow's unusual delivery also remains a matter of taste, particularly when the songs depend heavily on his voice.
Still, A Snow Capped Romance is a convincing meeting of heavy playing and clear songwriting. The strongest choruses make the record easy to return to, while the changing arrangements keep it from becoming too predictable. Its personality survives even when the influences are easy to recognise.
