Album review: 'What to Do When You Are Dead' by Armor for Sleep

What to Do When You Are Dead

What to Do When You Are Dead gives Armor for Sleep's melodic rock a darker setting. The songs follow a narrator looking back on life from the afterlife, but the record does not depend entirely on that idea. Clear choruses, firm guitar parts and Ben Jorgensen's anxious singing make the strongest material work on its own.

Car Underwater opens with a restrained, uneasy atmosphere before reaching a much larger chorus. The contrast gives the melody an immediate pull. The Truth About Heaven keeps that momentum, with the guitars working together around a clear vocal line. The pair give the album a strong opening.

Remember to Feel Real maintains more pressure. Its more direct approach brings a useful change after the shifts in the first two tracks. Awkward Last Words also benefits from the band's combined effort, with a strong guitar introduction and forceful drums supporting a vocal that carries urgency without losing its tune.

Stay on the Ground is more familiar in construction. A repeated line helps build tension towards the chorus, while the drums give the heavier passages weight. It works within a recognisable pattern, showing both the appeal and the limits of the group's approach.

The More You Talk the Less I Hear is less settled. Sound effects and a more intense vocal delivery disturb the smoother surface, suggesting the band could have pushed the arrangements further elsewhere. Basement Ghost Singing takes another route, using the guitars to maintain an eerie mood around the voice.

The main weakness is repetition across the full sequence. Several songs use similar guitar shapes, rhythms and changes in volume, while the afterlife theme can become an extra layer of seriousness rather than a source of variety. Listeners unconvinced by the emotional delivery may find the record overworked.

The End of a Fraud provides a suitably darker close. What to Do When You Are Dead is strongest when its mood and melody support each other, rather than asking the concept to supply all the meaning. Its opening songs and several effective heavier moments make that balance convincing often enough to outweigh the more familiar stretches.
