Album review: 'Opposites' by Biffy Clyro

Opposites

Opposites gives Biffy Clyro room to explore a larger version of their melodic rock sound. Across two discs, the band combine sharp guitar patterns, broad choruses and a wider range of instruments. The scale occasionally works against the songs, but the better material makes the ambition worthwhile.

Sounds Like Balloons shows the central appeal clearly. Its angular guitar playing sits beside a chorus with an immediate pull, making the complicated and accessible parts support one another. Biblical takes a more direct route towards a large melodic release. Both songs demonstrate how confidently the band can make detailed arrangements feel easy to follow.

The Joke's on Us and A Girl and His Cat bring more of the jagged guitar character forward. Their choruses remain broad, yet the playing gives them useful tension. That balance matters on an album where the polished sound could otherwise make very different songs feel too similar.

The Fog offers a slower change of atmosphere. Its delicate keyboard pattern gives way to imposing guitars, producing a convincing shift in weight. It is one of the moments where the extended format allows the band to explore an idea beyond the most obvious single arrangement.

The second disc makes some of the less usual instrumental choices more prominent. Stingin' Belle brings bagpipes into the sound, while Spanish Radio combines brass with the band's heavier guitar playing. Skylight adds electronic textures, extending the range without completely leaving the record's melodic character behind.

Not all twenty songs justify the same attention. Pocket and Woo Woo feel less substantial than the strongest tracks, and the repeated push towards a large chorus can become tiring over the full programme. The album would lose some scale but gain focus with a few tighter decisions.

Even so, Opposites contains enough variety and strong writing to make its length more than an exercise in excess. The best performances find a real connection between intricate playing and a direct tune. It is an uneven double album, but its most effective ideas give the broader ambition a convincing musical purpose.
