On Letting Go
On Letting Go gives Circa Survive's layered rock a clearer melodic focus. The winding guitars and restless rhythms remain, but the songs more often provide a firm route through them. Anthony Green's high voice is still a major part of the appeal. Here, the stronger arrangements give his delivery more effective changes in pressure.
Living Together makes that improvement clear. A direct guitar introduction leads into restrained verses and a larger chorus, where the two guitar parts fit around each other. The separate lines add detail without pulling the song away from its central melody. It is an assured opening that makes the band's strengths easy to hear.
The Greatest Lie and The Difference Between Medicine and Poison Is In The Dose also give their bigger moments room to arrive. Their easier openings develop towards more forceful choruses, with Green's voice supplying much of the lift. The latter is especially successful at combining a memorable hook with the band's less straightforward instrumental character.
Kicking Your Crosses Down takes a quieter route into that sound. Its soft opening and melodic guitar give the performance an attractive atmosphere before the music grows more urgent. The instruments work together to create a mood, rather than treating complexity as a reason to fill every gap.
The title track benefits from a similar awareness of space, especially after its larger release. These calmer passages matter because the combination of high singing and sharp guitar can become tiring. The record is most convincing when it changes the level of intensity instead of holding everything in place.
There are still limitations. Some songs follow familiar routes, and the drums do not always bring the variation that the guitar playing invites. The improvements are substantial enough to notice without making the album a complete change of direction.
Your Friends Are Gone supplies the strongest ending. Guitar and bass establish the song before a more restrained bridge prepares its emotional peak. Green's delivery gives that final rise real weight. On Letting Go succeeds through this balance of melody, atmosphere and release, making the band's musical identity more focused while leaving room for further development.
