Enthusiasm is a serious musical choice on Addicted. Devin Townsend builds large, bright choruses over heavy guitar rhythms, then lets Anneke van Giersbergen's voice open the sound even further. The record's appeal comes from that combination of physical weight and uncomplicated melodic pleasure, delivered with enough conviction to make its optimism feel substantial.
The title track establishes the scale immediately. Its guitar attack is forceful, but the vocal arrangement points towards release rather than confrontation. The rhythm is tightly controlled, and the electronic detail adds motion inside the dense production. The song makes a clear promise about the kind of energy the album will sustain.
Bend It Like Bender! brings the dance influence closest to the surface. Its steady pulse and repeated vocal hook are deliberately simple. Townsend does not hide the pop structure behind complicated playing, allowing the directness to become part of the song's personality.
Supercrush! is the strongest meeting of the two singers. The contrast between Townsend's rougher force and van Giersbergen's clear melodic presence gives the chorus a much larger emotional range. The guitars remain heavy without making the vocal exchange difficult to follow. It is a particularly effective example of an elaborate production serving a straightforward song.
Hyperdrive! gives van Giersbergen the lead on a reworked Townsend composition. Her phrasing changes its emotional emphasis, bringing a different kind of clarity to the melody. Ih-Ah! reduces the pressure and lets a gentler vocal idea carry the arrangement, providing a useful change in scale.
The constant positive energy can become insistent. Several songs aim for a similar uplifting response, and the broad gestures leave limited room for ambiguity. The best material avoids that limitation through strong individual melodies and the chemistry between the voices.
Numbered! restores a heavier emotional charge, while Awake!! expands the closing statement beyond the tighter forms around it. The album succeeds because its hooks remain strong beneath the enormous sound. Its joy is carefully constructed, but the performances make that construction feel spontaneous and easy to share.
