Album review: '21st Century Breakdown' by Green Day

21st Century Breakdown

The piano on 21st Century Breakdown is not there to offer a quiet break between punk songs. It helps set the scale of the whole album. Green Day build a broad rock record around grand entrances, sudden accelerations and choruses that aim well beyond the front row. There are strong songs inside that approach, even when the surrounding story becomes less clear.

The title track is an effective introduction to those ambitions. Its changes of pace give Billie Joe Armstrong several different ways to deliver the melody, and the band handle the transitions confidently. The performance feels committed rather than hesitant about the distance it has travelled from a simple three-chord attack.

Know Your Enemy makes a different calculation. Its repeated chant is hard to forget, though it offers less to return to once the immediate excitement has passed. East Jesus Nowhere has more weight in its rhythm and a sharper sense of menace. Both make their points loudly, but the second gives its anger a more interesting musical shape.

The album becomes more engaging when the arrangements change the emotional temperature. Last Night on Earth uses piano and a gentler vocal to create a small space inside a large production. Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl) brings a theatrical bounce, while Restless Heart Syndrome develops its uneasy mood with greater patience. These songs show that Green Day's ambition can produce more than another enormous chorus.

Christian and Gloria, the characters connecting the record, are harder to grasp than the emotions attached to them. The broad themes of faith, disillusionment and resistance do not always become a convincing narrative. Across eighteen tracks, that leaves some songs carrying more conceptual importance than their individual ideas can support.

There is still plenty to enjoy in the band's melodic confidence and forceful playing. 21st Century Breakdown is most persuasive when a particular tune takes control and the larger statement briefly looks after itself. Its best moments have personality as well as size, and they justify spending time with this uneven, determined record.
