Degradation Trip
Degradation Trip gives Jerry Cantrell's heavy rock a darker and more sustained presence. The guitars move through slow, substantial riffs, with vocal harmonies adding another layer to the sound. There are shorter songs between the longer arrangements, but the full record remains demanding. Its strongest moments make that weight feel purposeful rather than simply exhausting.
Psychotic Break establishes the mood through a deliberate pace and a forceful guitar setting. Cantrell's voice stays closely connected to the instruments, giving the opening a clear identity. Bargain Basement Howard Hughes continues the rougher guitar approach, making the album's heavier character difficult to miss.
Anger Rising is more immediately appealing. The guitar work supports a memorable song, with enough movement to give the longer arrangement a direction. The ending could still be tighter, but the strength of the central idea survives the extra length.
Angel Eyes provides another clear point of connection through its chorus. Solitude then reduces the scale, leaving acoustic guitar and the vocal further forward. The quieter setting does not remove the record's uneasy mood, but it gives the surrounding heavier material a useful contrast.
Hellbound restores a stronger pace, with active drums helping the guitar performance move firmly ahead. Chemical Tribe gives the bass and drums more space within an extended arrangement, showing that the rhythm section contributes more than a heavy foundation. Gone closes with a gentler, country-leaning character, providing some relief from the pressure before it.
The main limitation is the amount of music in this same dark world. The clean, controlled production can also make the performances feel less unpredictable than their intensity suggests. Several passages would gain from shorter forms, even when the instrumental ideas remain interesting.
Degradation Trip is most rewarding when the playing and the writing give each other a clear reason to continue. Cantrell has plenty of strong riffs and several convincing melodies, with the quieter songs helping the record hold its shape. It is an ambitious, substantial release that offers real rewards while asking for a considerable commitment.
