Larks’ Tongues in Aspic
Larks' Tongues in Aspic gives King Crimson a sound that can turn from delicate to threatening in a moment. David Cross's violin shares space with Robert Fripp's guitar, while John Wetton's bass and the percussion of Bill Bruford and Jamie Muir keep the arrangements active. The music is experimental, but its contrasts have a strong physical impact.
The opening title piece makes that clear. Quiet percussion gradually leads towards violin and a much heavier guitar sound, with the band moving between tense restraint and sudden force. The changes can be disorienting, especially when the violin is left to explore a calmer passage. Even there, the atmosphere remains unsettled rather than comfortable.
Book of Saturday offers a more direct song. Wetton's voice, Fripp's guitar and the violin give its short arrangement a gentler character. The smaller scale is useful after the opening piece, showing that the group can make a clear impression without building every idea into a large instrumental sequence.
Exiles develops the melodic side further through Mellotron and violin. The setting has beauty and a darker atmosphere beneath it, although the singing is less secure than the arrangement. Easy Money takes a firmer rhythmic route, adding a funky edge and room for the players to stretch. Its more exaggerated writing is less convincing than the instrumental exchanges.
The Talking Drum builds patiently around rhythm. The percussion gains weight as guitar and violin push the track towards a much more forceful conclusion. Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part Two then supplies a heavier, more structured finish, bringing the guitar and rhythm section into a close, demanding relationship.
The album is not equally compelling throughout. Some quiet passages test the attention, and the vocal songs do not always match the instrumental material's impact. Yet the combination of unusual percussion, forceful bass and the guitar-violin partnership gives it a distinctive identity. Larks' Tongues in Aspic is a demanding record whose strongest sections make the risk and uncertainty feel worthwhile.
