Burn My Eyes
The opening of Burn My Eyes is built around a particular kind of impact: a guitar figure stops, a sharp harmonic cuts through the gap, then the whole band land together. Machine Head make those interruptions feel physical. The technique becomes a signature across an album that combines thrash speed with a heavier, more deliberate groove.
Davidian is the clearest statement. The riff has an immediately recognisable shape, and Robb Flynn's vocal gives it a strong human focus. The closing section gets much of its power from slowing down. Chris Kontos's drumming makes the change feel immense without allowing the song to lose its movement.
Old follows with another distinct guitar figure and a darker atmosphere. The writing gives Flynn room to sound more controlled before he returns to a harsher delivery. The groove feels active because the drums keep adding detail around it. The band understand how a slight rhythmic change can give a repeated riff extra force.
A Thousand Lies supplies speed and a particularly effective guitar solo. None But My Own and The Rage To Overcome open more space inside the arrangements, allowing quieter passages to create tension before the heavier returns. The record has more dynamic range than its aggressive reputation might imply.
Some of the repeated tricks become less effective over time. The sharp guitar harmonics and sudden stops occasionally sound like a common solution to different songwriting problems. Real Eyes, Realize, Real Lies is an interesting texture of samples and rhythm, though it is less satisfying as a developed composition.
Blood For Blood restores a direct attack, and Block gives the album a suitably frantic close. Colin Richardson's clear, weighty production helps the riffs and drums retain their separate identities throughout. The record's best moments make a convincing connection between musical control and emotional pressure. Machine Head sound most distinctive when they shape that pressure into a memorable arrangement, with the opening songs showing just how forcefully they can do it.
