Such Jubilee
Such Jubilee makes its strongest impression through the connection between its two voices. Mandolin Orange keep the music gentle, with acoustic instruments and small arrangement changes supporting the songs. The sound is welcoming and carefully played, although the record sometimes feels too comfortable with its own familiar approach.
Old Ties and Companions opens with a warm sense of longing. The voices and instruments work closely together, giving the song an immediate appeal without a large chorus or a sudden rise in volume. Little Worlds and Jump Mountain Blues continue that understated strength, relying on melody and atmosphere rather than an obvious display of technique.
Settled Down adds a small electric-guitar contrast. From Now On provides another detail worth following, with Emily Frantz's lead voice and the soft keyboard sound widening the palette.
Rounder gives the darker writing an effective shape. The harmonies enter and leave with care, helping the story develop without adding unnecessary parts. Daylight brings more rhythmic life, placing its acoustic figure alongside keys, fiddle and a softly played snare. The arrangement has movement while remaining close to the album's quieter sound.
Blue Ruin is one of the most affecting songs. The measured performance gives its difficult subject weight, with the singing carrying a restrained anger. The backing is less forceful than the writing might suggest, and that can leave the track feeling a little too settled despite the strength of its central idea.
That reservation applies more broadly. Similar tempos and a narrow range of dynamics can soften the differences between songs. The duo have the skill to hold a small arrangement together, but there are moments when more contrast would make the words and melodies land more firmly.
Still, Such Jubilee offers more than a pleasant background sound. The close singing, thoughtful guitar work and careful instrumental choices make its strongest moments worth attention. It is a warm, sometimes overly cautious Americana record that succeeds through the quality of its performances and the feeling inside its best songs.
