Album review: 'Inflamed Rides' by O.R.k.

Inflamed Rides

Inflamed Rides introduces O.R.k. with short, changing songs rather than a long demonstration of progressive-rock technique. Heavy guitars, acoustic passages and psychedelic details are brought together with a useful sense of purpose. The music is often dark, but the arrangements keep moving, giving the record enough variety to avoid becoming a single extended mood.

Jellyfish provides a strong starting point. The riffs change direction while the drums give the performance an active foundation. LEF's voice adds an uneasy character, helping the song balance its accessible shape with the stranger sounds around it. It is an effective example of the band's ability to fit several ideas into a manageable space.

Pyre slows the movement and gives the music a more atmospheric setting. Funfair then makes a darker acoustic turn. These songs are important because the quieter instruments do more than fill the gaps between heavy sections. They give the album another kind of tension, and make its changes feel like part of the writing.

Breakdown brings a harder, more forceful approach, while Dream of Black Dust and Funny Games introduce a looser, jazz-influenced movement. The latter's awkward piano opening takes time to settle into its groove. That willingness to change character is engaging, even when the connections are not completely smooth.

There are limitations. Bed of Stones takes longer to find a convincing direction, and some of the treated singing can make the words difficult to follow. The playing is strong, but the less direct passages do not always communicate as clearly as the best riffs and melodies.

What holds the record together is the sense of musicians responding to one another. It can be forceful, spacious or unpredictable without relying on extended solos to prove its ambition. The psychedelic and progressive elements give the songs character while leaving room for a recognisable rock foundation.

Inflamed Rides is an inventive introduction with a few uneven moments. Its strongest passages offer a distinctive balance of weight and atmosphere, making it worthwhile for listeners who want adventurous guitar music in a concise form.
