Beyond Man and Time
Beyond Man and Time gives RPWL's melodic progressive rock a broad, ambitious setting. The music is built around patient arrangements, expressive guitar and layers of keyboards, with Yogi Lang's calm vocals keeping the larger pieces approachable.
After the short instrumental Transformed, We Are What We Are establishes that approach clearly. Sparse textures develop into a pattern of synthesizer, voice and light percussion, then the guitar and bass add a sharper edge. The arrival of a fuller melody releases the tension without breaking the song's atmosphere. It is one of the album's most effective passages.
Unchain the Earth is easier to grasp immediately, with a bright, almost eighties-pop quality. It still fits the surrounding music because the arrangement develops naturally rather than sounding like a separate attempt at a single. The familiar Pink Floyd influence remains audible, but RPWL's ability to combine atmosphere and accessible songwriting gives the song its own appeal.
The Road of Creation brings more movement and force, with drum breaks adding interest beneath the darker rock arrangement. Across the record, the keyboards provide more than a soft background. Organ, synthesizer and Mellotron-like textures add colour and shape, with the lead parts placing expression above speed.
The Fisherman makes the biggest demand on the listener. Its long structure allows for a careful build and some dramatic guitar playing, but not every change feels equally necessary. There are moments when the separate sections weaken its overall direction. The quieter ending of The Noon provides a useful release after that larger statement.
The album could use more of the emotional force found in its strongest passages. Some of the gentler stretches are well played without being quite as memorable. Even so, Beyond Man and Time has a clear musical identity and several excellent songs. It is a rewarding choice for listeners who enjoy melodic prog that develops gradually, with colour and mood taking priority over constant excitement.
