everything is alive
The synthesizers on everything is alive do not disappear behind the guitars. They move clearly between them, giving Slowdive a slightly sharper sound. The voices remain soft and the guitar layers familiar, but the record no longer seems to require every part to dissolve into the same haze. The contrast between clear patterns and long, fading sounds makes it appealing.
"shanty" starts with pulsing electronics before guitars and singing grow around them. The band takes its time without losing movement. Rhythm gives direction to a song which could easily depend entirely on atmosphere. "kisses" does something more direct. Its melody arrives quickly and the drums give it enough momentum to work as a straightforward pop song. The guitar retains a distinctive, slightly distorted colour around it.
The quieter "andalucia plays" matters just as much. A simple acoustic tune has room to breathe while the surrounding sounds gradually become fuller. Halstead's gentle singing keeps it small enough to feel personal. An additional voice later brings more feeling to the build. The album needs clearly formed songs like this to give its different sounds something to hold onto.
On "chained to a cloud", electronic patterns become more prominent again. The closing "the slab" uses a thicker mass of guitar and a firmer rhythm. These differences remain subtle. Anyone expecting a complete change of style will mainly find a careful shift. That usually proves sufficient. Slowdive preserve melody and atmosphere while letting the instruments work together differently. everything is alive is a restrained, warm record whose small decisions keep standing out long enough to invite another listen.
