Earth Is A Black Hole
Earth Is A Black Hole gives Teenage Wrist a brighter, more direct sound without removing the guitars that made their earlier music appealing. The distortion is less overwhelming, Marshall Gallagher's voice is clearer, and electronic details help the arrangements move. The result sits comfortably between dreamy alternative rock and a much more open kind of pop song.
Yellowbelly is a strong example of that change. Its melody has a lift that makes the song inviting, even when the mood underneath is uneasy. Gallagher handles the contrast well. His delivery has enough force to carry a large chorus, but the emotional quality matters more than a display of range.
High Again is more adventurous in its arrangement. A synthetic beat and watery guitar sound establish a quieter setting before the music grows into a much larger pop finish. The shift does not hide its ambition, but the electronic parts have a purpose. They change the scale of the song rather than simply decorating another guitar riff.
The same balance runs through the more immediate material. New Emotion has a bright, energetic pull, and Wasting Time brings a determined pop-punk edge. The grungier tones and drifting production still give these songs some weight. Teenage Wrist are not abandoning their earlier character so much as finding a more direct way to present it.
That wider range creates a few awkward joins. Different styles do not always settle into one consistent flow, and some of the larger gestures aim higher than the writing can support. Stella makes a particularly clear example at the close: its building sound promises a bigger release than it finally delivers. The album is strongest when the hook and the arrangement reach the same level together.
Even with those limits, this is a worthwhile step forward. The songs are easy to enter, the production gives them room, and Gallagher sounds comfortable at the centre of the music. Earth Is A Black Hole offers enough warmth to balance its darker feeling. For listeners who enjoy melodic guitar music with a little haze and a few electronic surprises, it is an engaging place to start.
