Album review: 'Big Kiss Goodnight' by Trapped Under Ice

Big Kiss Goodnight

Big Kiss Goodnight gives Trapped Under Ice's heavy hardcore a clearer melodic shape. The riffs remain substantial and Justice Tripp's voice has a sharp, urgent presence, but the band make more room for memorable vocal parts and recognisable song structures. The change is effective, even if the cleaner sound removes a little of the roughness that might make the music feel more threatening.

Born to Die establishes the approach with a direct arrangement built around returning vocal sections. The shape gives the heavier playing a clear purpose, allowing the song to hold attention without relying entirely on a large breakdown.

Disconnect is another strong example. Its crashing drums and chugging guitars move towards a forceful rhythmic peak, while the more melodic vocal character gives the arrangement another point of connection. The band bring the accessible and heavier sides together particularly well here.

The production helps the guitar detail remain audible. The leads add colour without taking attention away from Tripp, and the drums have enough clarity to make their smaller movements matter.

Time Waits provides a useful increase in speed, showing how much energy the band can create through a more urgent approach. Dead Inside and True Love make room for more melodic singing, adding character without turning the music into a completely different style.

There are limits to the range. More faster material would give the full sequence a better sense of contrast, and some of the familiar rhythmic ideas are easier to recognise than to distinguish from one another. The polished presentation also makes the guitar melodies clearer at the expense of some raw force.

Even so, Big Kiss Goodnight is a strong and confidently played record. Its best songs combine groove, clear writing and an effective vocal presence, giving listeners more to remember than the heaviness alone. Trapped Under Ice keep their central sound intact while making several useful changes around it.
