Album review: 'Red Headed Stranger' by Willie Nelson

Red Headed Stranger

Red Headed Stranger asks for close attention through small gestures. Willie Nelson tells a story of violence, loss and a wandering preacher with unusually spare country music. Short songs and instrumental passages form a connected sequence, with the singing giving the fragments their strongest sense of continuity. The result is absorbing, although the deliberately bare approach leaves little room for an easy distraction.

Time of the Preacher introduces the central figure. Its returning theme gives the short sequence a clear point of reference.

The title song keeps the narrative direct. Nelson's relaxed delivery avoids making every event a dramatic announcement, letting the sadness in the melodies carry much of the feeling. The music leaves space around the words, so a small change in the voice can matter as much as a fuller arrangement might elsewhere.

Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain is the clearest emotional centre. Its simple melody and carefully placed harmonies make the loss immediately understandable. The performance holds up as an individual song while also deepening the loneliness of the story around it.

The accompaniment remains a major strength. Guitar, piano, bass and light percussion support the vocal without competing for attention. The balance gives Nelson's expressive singing a close, unforced quality, while the quieter instrumental moments maintain the same modest scale.

That restraint also creates the album's main difficulty. Some sections feel more like connecting pieces than fully satisfying songs, and the story can be harder to follow than its basic outline suggests. Listeners looking for a full set of immediately memorable choruses may find the sequence too elusive.

Hands on the Wheel offers a suggestion of comfort near the end, before Bandera leaves the closing space to the instruments. Red Headed Stranger succeeds through its voice, atmosphere and patient construction, with a few thin stretches keeping it from being equally rewarding at every moment.
