Static Tensions
Static Tensions gives Kylesa's heavy riffs exceptionally lively movement. Two drummers provide more than extra volume. Their parts can take different paths while maintaining the same groove. Above them, guitars connect punk aggression with psychedelic colours. The music is immediate enough to grab attention, but contains considerable detail beneath that first impression.
Insomnia For Months makes the rhythmic force especially clear. Guitars have a sharp, recognisable line and the drums keep everything fierce. The band can play busily without losing the song's direction. Interplay enlarges the music while the riff stays central.
Unknown Awareness chooses a more spacious setting. Psychedelic guitars suggest classic rock, with melody keeping the experiment grounded.
Running Red takes more time to develop. Piano introduces the piece before guitars establish a much heavier movement. The drums keep the heavier music mobile. Softer sounds help develop the song rather than providing a separate pause.
Voices suit that variety. Laura Pleasants and Phillip Cope can attack roughly or choose a more melodic line. The spacious production does place vocals far back at times, however. Some words consequently become less clear even when instruments push strongly forward. The songs' force nevertheless wins out. Static Tensions combines heavy grooves with enough individual playing to keep revealing details. Its range is considerable, but the record remains a convincing collection of strong riffs and lively rock music. The drummers and guitars work towards the same songs, making changing rhythms feel useful instead of merely impressive. The complexity strengthens that immediate and direct appeal.
