Silverchair formed in Newcastle, Australia, in 1992 as Innocent Criminals, with Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou. A national demo competition brought them attention in 1994 and led to a record deal. Their catalogue developed from heavy alternative rock into more varied arrangements, following a clear interest in melody and changing musical textures.
