Spiritual Instinct
Spiritual Instinct gives Alcest's layered guitar music a more immediate, riff-led shape. The heavier passages have a strong rhythmic centre, while Neige's clean singing keeps melody close to the surface. Harsh vocals and calmer textures still belong to the same sound. The six songs are easy to approach, though their familiar patterns can make the complete record less distinctive than its best moments.
Les Jardins De Minuit opens with a prominent bass and drum foundation before guitar and voice fill out the main idea. The move into faster, harsher playing gives the song an early burst of force. Its melodic passages keep that force from becoming the only attraction, making the contrast between the voices especially useful.
Protection continues the more direct approach through recurring riffs and active rhythm. The playing has enough energy to make a straightforward musical idea effective. It is also one of the places where the album's limits become clear: familiar vocal shapes and returning guitar patterns do not always lead towards a particularly surprising development.
Sapphire makes the melodic side more accessible through a crunchy, steady-moving guitar sound. It offers a clear point of entry, but its directness can also leave less to discover within the arrangement. The record is more engaging when that simpler structure gives way to a wider range of textures.
L'Île Des Morts provides one of the strongest examples. Flowing melodies and heavier instrumental passages give the extended song room to grow, with rough vocals adding another level of intensity. Its changing weight feels more substantial than a repeated build towards the same kind of peak.
Le Miroir reduces the pressure through slower, sustained guitar lines. Additional voices, electronic colour and light drums gradually broaden the setting. The title track then brings back a fuller, more anthemic sound, giving the closing sequence a useful sense of contrast.
The main weakness is how readily some melodies and guitar ideas blend together across the album. The clear production and strong performances cannot make every return equally memorable. Even so, the more varied second half and the physical drive of the opening songs give Spiritual Instinct plenty to recommend. It is a focused, uneven record whose best arrangements make its direct approach worthwhile.
