There is very little level ground on Blood Mountain. Mastodon keep moving between fast metal, heavy grooves and stranger, more open passages, with each change introducing a different problem for the listener to follow. The album's fantasy journey fits that restless construction, though its strongest attraction is the way the four musicians make complicated ideas feel alive.
